The Best of 2017

2017 proved to be a great year filled with inspiring programs and lots of modern show and tell! We enjoyed so many fun group activities over the last year, the first being National Quilting Day where we demonstrated upcycling for the museum guests. In April, several of our members attended Mary Dittenber's workshop on fabric dyeing. We were fortunate to have our modern quilts on exhibit from May 1st to July 1st at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum. Our first road trip to the Quilt Festival in Kansas City was a blast, even if the weather was horrible on the way home! Sew Days at the county fair were filled with lots of quilting tips and tricks as demonstrated by our members. Our "Celebrate Nebraska 150" charity quilt raised $3950 for Habitat for Humanity and we were able to meet the winner of the raffle at our sew day! Lots of sewing happened throughout the year. Pillowcases and wall hangings were made for Habitiat for Humanity and our 2018 QuiltCon Charity Quilt was completed. The Curves Ahead and That's Modern Challenges resulted in so many amazing pieces! At the end of the year, the IQSCM invited our guild to "Quilts and Cocktails," a reception with Erica Waaser. We enjoyed food and drinks and a wonderful presentation by Erica on her Voltage exhibit. We celebrated our final meeting of the year with a murder mystery dinner, "Horrible Happenings at the Winery."

Dyeing Workshop, National Quilting Day, Taming Color: A Personal Approach by Leah Sorensen Hayes, Sew Days at the County Fair, Road Trip to KC, Raffle Quilt Winner Rennie Austin, "Quilts and Cocktails" an Evening with Erica Waaser, 2018 QuiltCon Charity Quilt, Horrible Happenings at the Winery.

We have received wonderful praise for our contributions to Art Market from the IQSCM.

Dear Members of Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild,

On behalf of the Friends of the IQSCM, thank you kindly for the great show of support during our recent Art Market.  The lovely and generously donated quilted silent auction quilt was amazing!  Your help in the kitchen and in supplying food was invaluable.  Ana a number of you donated items to be sold as well.  We are so grateful for everything you did.
Thank you for your commitment to Friends and to Quilt House.  We are so appreciative!

Kind Regards,

Diane Harris, President Friends of the IQSCM

"...I look back over the months of planning and it’s easy to see what amazing support the LMQG provided in this endeavor.
·         I know that many LMQG members provided donations for the Friends table but in most cases I don’t know the names and specifics of the donations because many came in anonymously to Quilt House.  So I must rely on this letter to express my thanks to each of you.
·         The silent auction quilt was a wonderful addition to the Market. I think we all hoped the quilt would go for even more than the $600 because it was certainly worth more, but that was still a very impressive amount.  And the quilt added such class to the Market.
·         When Sheila told me that the LMQG had agreed to provide the sandwiches for both days of the Market plus staff the kitchen, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!  It was such a gift to me as chair to know that I didn’t need to fret about the food.  And, when going through the vendor evaluations, every vendor commented on how much the food helped them.  Things like that go a long way in bridging the very generous 40% they donate back to the IQSCM as vendors.  And isn’t it interesting how things of thoughtfulness (I.e. the food provided, watching their tables while they take a break, helping them load and unload) make such a difference.

Thank you for giving back so generously to the IQSCM.  We are richly blessed to have this amazing museum of quilts in our community.

With kind regards,

Dorothy Heidemann-Nelson

October Meeting Highlights

From the October 24th Meeting: Make It Modern with Sheila Green.

Sheila gave a very informative program on how to turn a traditional quilt block into a modern masterpiece! The process to make these quilts was a simple one. Sew an oversized traditional block, cut it up and rearrange. Sheila had 12 wonderful quilt examples, two of which were sewn by her daughter. After the presentation, we were all able to participate in the design exercise, which was a lot of fun! If you missed the meeting and would like to learn more, Sheila will share again at our November 11th sew day. Thank you for a fun and inspiring presentation, Sheila!

The slate of officers for 2018 was presented and accepted.

September Meeting Highlights

From the September 26th Meeting: Tantalizing Tessellations with Nancy Goff

Nancy Goff "A Tessellation of Ginko" presentation
tes·sel·la·tion
ˌtesəˈlāSH(ə)n/
noun
noun: tessellation; plural noun: tessellations; noun: tesselation; plural noun: tesselations
  1. the process or art of tessellating a surface, or the state of being tessellated.
    • an arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping.
Nancy's really into puzzles and if you've ever seen her 15th tessellation of a pentagon quilt, you begin to understand her obsession! Nancy shared all the secrets of her "A Tessellation of Ginko" quilt with us, which we have been admiring since the curves ahead challenge. It is always fascinating to see a person's creative process and Nancy's step by step approach to designing and creating this quilt had some of us hoping that she will write a pattern and teach a class on how to make it some day! Thank you for a great presentation, Nancy! We can't wait to see what mathematical quilt you create next.
