Best of 2016

2016 was a year filled with lots of firsts for the Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild.
  • We put on our first quilt show and retreat.
  • We displayed modern quilts and demonstrated improv quilt blocks at National Quilting Day.
  • The Try-Angle and Make A Statement challenges got us thinking outside the box.
  • We worked together to make Quilts for Pulse and an improv block quilt for charity.
  • We enjoyed a year full of informative programs and sew days!
Thank you, LMQG, for a fun year! Looking forward to seeing everyone on January 31st at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm.

Highlights from the Holiday Party & Announcements

Holiday Party Highlights

The 2016 Holiday Party was well attended and the quilting themed games got everyone involved!

A special thanks to the organizers of the party:  Sheila Green, Kris Jarchow, Mary Dittenber, Michelle Raphael, Linda Crump, and Jennifer VanDyke.

The party started off with a fun "What am I?" icebreaker to get us moving around and talking (not like we needed help with talking.  It got pretty loud.)

Everyone brought a fat quarter (some good, some "ugly") and those were used for prizes for many of the games.  Other prizes were handmade items donated by members.  Everyone walked away with something.

Other quilty games we played:  Charades using quilting terms or blocks, word scramble, blind fat quarter toss (harder than it sounds), and a new activity that will likely be repeated....Jingle Bell Box activity.

The party was a great way to celebrate our friendships and connections we have through quilting.  2016 was a fantastic year for the Lincoln MQG!!!  Thank you to the outgoing board members and welcome to the 2017 Board.

August & September Sew Day Highlights

We've enjoyed two sew days in a row at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum,  having one in August AND September!
The focus for the August sew day was "Wonky Houses." The scraps were flying as Kristie Jarchow showed us how to make some fun house blocks! Finished blocks can be made into wall hangings for Habitat for Humanity.

Our guild's latest challenge, "Make A Statement," is to make a quilt of any size that features words. Have you started yet? They are due at the October meeting!

September's "What Are You Trying To Say?" was focused on adding text to our quilt projects. Phyllis Higley, Kristie Jarchow and Jennifer Van Dyke presented lots of ideas for our "Make A Statement" challenge! Paper pieced letters, fabric paint, thread writing and appliqued letters were shown for inspiration.

There was a variety of quilt projects being worked on and the lovely ladies of the QuiltCon Charity Quilt team made progress on the charity quilt.

The next sew day:
 November 12th, 2016
10:30 am - 3:30 pm
International Quilt Study Center and Museum
We'll be sharing holiday gift ideas!

July Meeting Highlights

July Program: Dr. Hillestad on Creativity

Dr. Robert Hillestad gave a delightful talk Tuesday night! He is a design educator and studio textiles artist whose work has been shown in more than 150 exhibitions in the US and abroad and is represented in numerous private, corporate and museum collections. When he retired after 31 years of teaching at UNL, the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery was named in his honor.

His love of textiles began in his mother's sewing room. As a child, he would sort fabrics from her scrap bag into different colors and textures. The creative process had begun!

His inspiration comes from many places. Art, architecture and fabrics speak to him, as well as collections of things. He uses many different techniques to create his works, from knitting and crochet to painting sewing and dyeing.  It was a special treat to have his assistants walk the pieces around the room so they could be seen up close!

Here's a quick list of his advice to us on how to be creative.
  • Find mentors
  • Interact with people and community.
  • Failure is part of the process. Never discard a project because work evolves over time.
  • If you are out of ideas, change up the mode, go shopping or change projects.
  • Do not wait to create that idea in your head, someone else will beat you to it!
  • Do something creative every day!
Thank you for the inspiring talk, Dr. Hillestad! If you are interested, Dr. Hillestad has compiled a Creativity Reading List, which can be found in the meeting minutes tab above. Click on July to find the list!

Presentation of quilt to Allie Siebert from the Yellow Barne from the retreat committee.
Thank you to Allie for hosting our first LMQG retreat!
