May Recap

Art Element Space - Barbara Chestnut

Space, as one of the classic seven elements of art, refers to the distances or areas around, between, and within components of a piece. Space can be positive or negative, open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space refers to the background. When used creatively and intelligently, positive and negative space together can tell a story using visual composition alone. The term negative space is something of a misnomer.

Negative space is, quite simply, the space that surrounds an object in an image. Just as important as that object itself, negative space helps to define the boundaries of positive space and brings balance to a composition.

Here is a video by KQED on the element of space. CLICK

One of the examples Barbara showed was a quilt she made. Imagine this piece without the dark sashing or negative space. Busy and confusing. Add the sashing and the space is more defined and allows your eye to move and rest.

Do You EPP? Presented by Sarah Masseth

Sarah gave us some do's and don't's on English Paper piecing. Thread basting vs glue basting, the choice is yours. Buy the papers if you can, they help with consistency in size. If your brave, make your own, or you can find several sites online with templates you can print.

Here are a few examples of her work

She also had the membership work on a great pincushion using glue basting. Links for the pin cushion and the basics of EPP can be found on our resource page.

The members were given some fabric squares and templates and asked to give EPP a try.

A few members brought some of their EPP projects

Oh Scrap! Challenge quilts were collected.

We had a random drawing of all the entries and Liz Thanel won the prize of 4 blue & white fat quarters and a half yard of a blue ombre fabric.

They will be presented in a show at the Burkeholder Project
719 P Street, Haymarket District, Lincoln, NE June 7-30, 2019.
