June - September 2025 - Scrap Busting Challenge
Following our Scrap Busting meeting event, create any size quilt or other product constructed primarily from the scraps received at the scrap exchange. Your new piece is due at the September meeting.
January - July 2025 - Color Improvisation Challenge
- Create a piece based on what you will learn about Color Improvisation.
- Width: 20-40 inches
- Length: no restrictions (not more than a wall height)
- Due at June LMQG meeting (no later than July meeting)
- Each member can submit one or more quilts, but only one is guaranteed to be shown, others as space allows.
- Your Name
- Name of your Quilt (or state ‘unnamed’)
- Size of your quilt
- Artists statement about your quilt
- Due April 29 Meeting
- Make a traditional block with modern characteristics
- Incorporate any blue fabric and up to 2 more colors (prints and/or solids)
- Bring 1 or more blocks (they will be kept and made into a quilt)
- Size of block: 9 ½, or 12 ½, or 15 ½ inches (unfinished; so it can be sewn into a quilt; then the finished block sizes will end up as 9, 12, or 15 inches)
August-October 2024, Anniversary Based Mini-Challenge
- Create 2 modern blocks
- Make them into potholders to be donated to the IQM.
- Information flyers and batting were available to members.
- Due: October for ‘show and tell’.
- 6” to 10” in size, any shape
- Fabric should be 100% quilt quality cotton
- Batting should be 2 layers of cotton or wool or 1 layer of cotton batting plus 1 layer of insulation such as Insul-Bright©
- Include a hanging loop or ring
The Maximalism challenge will be due in April 2024.
Second Chances: Upcycled Modern Quilts
Challenge
Feature HRTs (half-rectangle triangles) in a quilt project of any size. Due July 27th.

1. Purchased patterns or designs
-change up fabrics, colors, change layout or size, maybe secondary patterns, change size of design, make only one block and so on.
2. No Plan: Create shapes and odd sized pieces, strips etc…
-work out sections and build the piece up with no particular outcome
(Sherri Lynn Wood’s flexible patterning - “Yes, and”- philosophy)
3. With intent
-design blocks, shapes etc with a plan for placement, size or finish for the most part
4. Inspired by something in nature, photograph or emotion
-work to recreate it or small portion of it (leaning towards art quilts) and can fall into any of the above.
- Make a quilt at least 80 inches perimeter.
- Choose one of the 4 improv processes above.
- Due April meeting (Apr 25).
- Make a quilt in the style of Carolina Oneto
- 20” x 20” minimum size to as large as you want
- 3 color minimum
- Due at the July LMQG Meeting (6/26/22)
