This is a technique, rather than project workshop. Deanna will show us how to get started; enlarge a photo, choose colors and fabrics, raw edge/applique techniques, embellishments, and products she uses. Toss any “rules” out the window and use the information to expand your horizons and let your imagination run free!

 Starting as a traditional quilter, Deanna’s techniques are still evolving, combining techniques from multiple sources including Susan Carlson’s book Serendipity Quilts, workshops with Danny Amazonas, Stephanie Brandenburg with Frond Design Studios, and Laura Heine technique.

Quilted Jacket Workshop

Let’s make a quilted jacket-today’s most popular quilted wearable!  We will meet twice with homework between the two sessions.  I recommend starting with a simple pattern of 3 pieces (pictured and included in workshop fee).  I have the master pattern for you to trace off your size (sizes 0-2 to 28-30) and detailed sewing instructions.  There are many options available with this pattern.  If you use another pattern, please be totally familiar with all steps. 

 

3 ways to start (based on your skill level):

• Purchase pre-quilted bedding.  Throw size for small size, twin/full for medium and queen for larger sizes or use a quilt.  Buy a king and make 2-3 jackets!

• Make a whole cloth jacket.  Pick one fabric to top, another for lining.  Lining may flip to front to form collar.

• Create patchwork for all or a portion of the jacket.  For instance, piece in a large quilt block on the back of the jacket or create patchwork for all your pattern pieces.

July 30, 10am-noon: You can view and try on finished jackets and “muslins” made from the included  pattern, then trace off your size pattern on freezer paper (included).  Choice of fabric requirements for your size and quilting will be discussed.  Your “homework” will be to purchase materials (quilted bedding or yardage and batting) for your jacket, create the patchwork the size of your pattern pieces, cut out the pattern pieces for top, batting and backing, sandwich the three layers, quilt each unit (sleeves, fronts and back).  Or, if you choose to use pre-quilted bedding, all you’ll do is cut out the pattern pieces!

August 13, 10am -3pm: We will construct our jackets. 

Supplies needed:

July 30:  Bring yourself and pattern you have selected (if not using the provided pattern).

August 13:  Bring jacket pattern pieces (already cut and quilted), sewing machine in good working conditionwith zigzag or overcast stitch, walking foot preferable, thread to match fabrics, about ½ yard extra fabric to make 2.5” wide quilt binding (edge around jacket), scissors, pins and seam ripper.

Foundation Paper Piecing De-mystified 

with Nancy Goff

You have wanted to try foundation paper piecing (FPP) but everyone says it is too difficult.  Or you have tried it and were unhappy with the results.  

When you are first learning FPP there are lots of details to pay attention to and missing a step can create a less than happy experience.

The goal of this class is to take you step by step, and to emphasize the key steps so you can be successful.  

 

Even if you have done some FPP, these tips may help you be more successful. 

Nancy says "I hope to help you love FPP as much as I do!"

We will complete four 6” sections to complete the 12”mini quilt. 

Skill level: Beginner – intermediate.    

 

Materials List:

Fabric: (1) FQ each of: (6) colors of your choosing for the shape. background Tools specific to FPP: Add-a-Quarter Ruler or other 12” ruler (a regular ruler will work, but it is much easier with the Add-a-quarter ruler) Glue stick (Elmer’s Washable School Glue) Mechanical pencil.

Other Supplies: Sewing machine and accessories Scissors for paper Scissors for fabric Rotary cutter Small cutting mat. Iron & pressing mat  (Both irons and cutting mats will be available to share, but we will need to cut and press between the sewing of each seam) Extension cords Paper and pencil for notes.
