From the October 24th Meeting: Make It Modern with Sheila Green. 

Sheila gave a very informative program on how to turn a traditional quilt block into a modern masterpiece! The process to make these quilts was a simple one. Sew an oversized traditional block, cut it up and rearrange. Sheila had 12 wonderful quilt examples, two of which were sewn by her daughter. After the presentation, we were all able to participate in the design exercise, which was a lot of fun! If you missed the meeting and would like to learn more, Sheila will share again at our November 11th sew day. Thank you for a fun and inspiring presentation, Sheila!

That's Modern Challenge Reveal 

We had a great turn out for the challenge! 37 quilts were shown at the meeting. If you are still finishing your piece, you can still participate (Ahem we're talking to you PIXELIZATION!) We have two upcoming events that your members might be interested in attending.

1) On Thursday, November 9th, Jacquie Gehring will be presenting, "Focus on Design" at our guild meeting. 7-9pm at Kauffman Foundation, 4801 Rockhill Road, KCMO. As Jacquie is a national speaker, we will be charging $5 for non-KCMQG members.

Additionally, there are a few spots still available for her discussion, "How do I Quilt this Quilt?" on Friday evening (11/10) and a few spots available at her "Walk" workshop on Saturday (11/11).

2) Kansas City: An Inspiration to Modern Quilters - KCMQG Quilt Show will be running from November 2nd - November 27th at the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Community Christian Church at 4601 Main Street, Kansas City, MO. Admission is Free and the church is open during regular business hours: Monday-Friday 9am - 4:30pm, closed Saturdays, Sunday, 8am - 1pm.

1. the process or art of tessellating a surface, or the state of being tessellated.

   • an arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping.

Nancy's really into puzzles and if you've ever seen her 15th tessellation of a pentagon quilt, you begin to understand her obsession! Nancy shared all the secrets of her "A Tessellation of Ginko" quilt with us, which we have been admiring since the curves ahead challenge. It is always fascinating to see a person's creative process and Nancy's step by step approach to designing and creating this quilt had some of us hoping that she will write a pattern and teach a class on how to make it some day! Thank you for a great presentation, Nancy! We can't wait to see what mathematical quilt you create next.

May Meeting Highlights

From the May 30th Meeting: Curves Ahead Challenge Reveal 

The criteria for the curve challenge was to create a finished quilt using curves, any method. We had eighteen members participate in the challenge. Here are the results!

Everyone in attendance voted for their favorite quilt based on best use of curve technique, modern aesthetic and overall appeal. Here are the winners! 1st place: Nancy Goff,  2nd place: Liz Thanel, and a three way tie for third place: Peg Pennel, Vicky Bedell, and Chris Taylor. 

A big thank you to Kristie Jarchow for making the prize bags using our logo fabric!

After the challenge reveal, we moved upstairs to see our Modern Quilts display in the Beavers Terrace Gallery. Our quilts will be on display at the IQSCM until June 18th, 2017. Check out our Facebook page for more photos, button in the sidebar!

An Evening with Peg Pennell: How to enter quilt contests and what quilt judges look for when evaluating your quilt. 

A huge thank you to Peg for all the great information about entering quilts in contests and challenges! Some things judges look for when evaluating quilts are:

• Design (Visual Impact)
• Technique (Does the piece lay flat, edges hang correctly, are the corners square, is the quilting appropriate, are the quilting stitches even, is the binding well attached and filled and are the mitered corners sewn shut)

Here are some of Peg's tips for entering contests and challenges:

• Read the Rules
• Enter in the correct category
• Take quality photos of your quilt
• Label your piece with the name, size and contact information
• Enter SOMETHING and share it with people! 
• Learn from the judges comments to improve your workmanship. Realize that those comments and ratings are one judges opinion on that day.

• Quilt what you love!

QuiltCon Charity Quilt: "Celebrate Nebraska 150" 

 Sheila presented our finished QuiltCon Charity Quilt. 

Thank you to the quilt committee: Ronda Eddy, Kristine Morrow, Barbara Kitsmiller, Michelle Raphael, Sarah Maseth, Diane Wilson, Susan Wick, Kristie Jarcow, Liz Thanel, Sheila Green and Mary Dittenber. 

After the quilt is shown at QuiltCon, Rhonda Eddy will be the Quilt Mom. Beginning in March, we will raffle this quilt, with the proceeds to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

National Quilting Day: March 18th at IQSCM we will demo/display Upcycling. We will be needing volunteers to help in our Upcycle booth as well as other areas of the museum all throughout the day. We are very excited for LMQG to be able to contribute to this event and want everyone who can be there to sign up to help in some way. Please contact June Pederson or Marsha Conley to volunteer.
