Celebrate Nebraska 150, LMQG QuiltCon Charity Quilt 2017

by Mary Dittenber
During our first year as The Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild, we decided to enter the QuiltCon Challenge after several members were chatting about challenges and not wanting to let this opportunity pass us by.  We were super excited when we saw the color pallet was our state colors and things just fell in place from there.  A high majority of members, with various skill levels, stepped up to the plate to help with every aspect of the quilt from design to quilting.

First we put together a design team and decided on a project manager.  It was amazing to see all the different ideas, but once we decided on a small state block offset within a larger block, everything came together.

We had to get permission to use the state block. Then we focused on the 150th theme for our State’s Birthday in 2017.

What a great coincidence that our charity is Habitat for Humanity and they will be building the 150th home locally.  The quilt will be raffled off and all proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity this year.

We received a contribution of fabric from Sew Creative, a local quilt store in Lincoln Nebraska.  We then handed out packets to each guild members for them to sew, incorporating some of their own fabric, and returning to the sew team to put the quilt top together.  Upon completion of the top and the backing we gathered at one of the members’ longarm to quilt the quilt.

Looking at this beautiful quilt now the one thing that stands out is how many of our members reached out and touched this quilt, and also how much fun we had during the entire project.

Participating in this challenge has taught our guild to go with our members strengths, with teamwork many things are possible, and if you ask for help you can get amazing results.

Please help us support Habitat for Humanity's 150th home by purchasing a ticket to win this quilt! Tickets are $5 each, drawing will be held November 11th, 2017.

Yesterday, March 11, a few of us were able to attend the ground breaking ceremony at the 150th house being built by Habitat for Humanity. Mayor Chris Beutler and Lt. Gov.Mike Foley helped with the program. It was cold out here in Nebraska but an exciting new start for the young family.
