T.O.M 2019

T.O.M. (technique of the month) *

What's it all about?   -Each month at our LMQG meetings we will introduce one to two improv block techniques to try.  The block tutorials will be linked to this page and you can make as many as you want. Use the colors and sizes listed below. Turn them in each month and at the end of the year we will ask for volunteers to construct into quilts for options of charity or guild money making. Most of all...try something new and have fun!

Fabrics:  Pantone color of the year "Living Coral", salmon, orangey, pinky but make them tone on tone or solids. Samples given out at meetings.  Cream is the other color. Please stay to these two colors only.

While the tutorials are done with various colors, we want you to stay with the two color palette for the charity quilt. If you like the technique, please feel free to make any of the blocks in any colors you like.

Size: Unfinished 12.5" square, 6.5" square, or 6.5" x 12.5" rectangle. Most of the tutorials will finish around these sizes. Not all of the tutorials are clear on fabrics needed but we suggest that you start with bigger base pieces and just try the technique and see where you end up.

For most of the blocks, a fat quarter will be large enough.

Leftover blocks were made into a throw 48" x 60"
With a few more blocks on the back.
Last blocks went into a small wall-hanging donated to Habitat.

Great Job to everyone for making blocks with these techniques.

1. Feb: Improv Plus Block
Tutorial No Longer Available

The block in tutorial is 8.5" So for our sizes needed try using 13" base to start for a 12.5 unfinished or 7" base for 6.5"unfinished.

2. Feb: Improv Quarter Log Cabin or Chevron Block
Tutorial No Longer Available

Cut strips long enough and monitor using 6.5", 12.5" square ruler as you are building your strips. Vary widths of strips cut depending on size you are making.

1. March: Wonky Churndash
Tutorial No Longer Available

Tutorial is for a 6.5" unfinished block. If you choose to make a 12.5" unfinished you can figure the pieces by planning for a simple 9 patch. 3 blocks across and down means that finished parts need to measure at least 4.5". If you have trouble help is available at meetings or sew days.

2. March: Spikes
Tutorial No Longer Available

Tutorial is for 6.5" unfinished blocks. You can make a 12.5" unfinished block by making the strips at least 13" to start. Use your 12.5" or 6.5" square ruler to measure as you construct blocks as a guide.

1. April: Improv Stripped Geese
Tutorial HERE

Tutorial is for a 6.5" x 12.5" block. Feel free to make it shorter ( 6.5 x 6.5 ) or double it to a 12.5 x 12.5.

2. April: North to West
Tutorial HERE

While the tutorial is for a 16 x 16 quilt-as-you-go pillow, it is easy to adjust it to a 12.5 x 12.5 by simply eliminating a few rows. As far as construction, the only change is you leave the batting/backing out of the equation and piece the fabric only.

1. June: Freehand Curved Strips

Tutorial HERE

Because it can be difficult to execute sharp narrow curves on a small block, we are asking for a 12.5 inch for this technique. If you think you can do it, a 6.5 will be fine.

2. June: Scrap Bin Geese

Tutorial HERE

Feel free to make either/or a 6.5 or 12.5 inch block. Have fun with this one and don't worry too much if points aren't perfect or perfectly matched.

July
Lattice Tutorial No Longer Available

It might be a little difficult getting the lattice to appear because of the use of only 2 colors. Pay attention to value to achieve a nice contrast in this block

2. Slice and Insert
Have fun with this block. Cut and slice and put it back together your way.
