We're trying something a little different this year with our February 8th Sew Day. Feel free to come and sew on a project of your choosing from 10:30 - 1 pm, but our own Kris Jarchow will be there to lead us through . . .
Stack, Strip or QAYG
your way to quickly making Charity Quilts
Let’s make some quilts from that large stash you have (I know it’s not just me that can’t see over my stash)
~ Bring your sewing machine and supplies as usual and whatever projects you want to work on.
Extra supplies:
I am looking for you to bring one, two or all of the following:
- 10” square with a contrasting but coordinating 5” square - one of each to try my method of stacking and making a single block. (bring more if you want - I used 20 of each to create a kids size quilt, plus some extra fabric for sashing, kid friendly bright fabrics and if this is for you, you can keep making blocks to make it bigger)
- Strip it. If you want to try this method of quickly stripping a quilt you will need to bring 8 - 4.5” wof strips. Contrasting, coordinating. The 8 strips can be divided into 4 each of 2 coordinating fabrics or (what I choose… 2 each of 4 coordinating but contrasting pieces) or you can make all 8 contrasting but scrappy pieces. One of these sets of 8 strips will make a Kids size quilt if you add both a 2” border and a 4” border to this piece. But wait, there is more…if you like how quick and easy this is to make you can make 3 more groups of 8 strips and you will have a quilt big enough for a twin bed and you can skip the borders. Yay!
- Lastly, QAYG projects vary so much. If you have lots of strip scraps that you want to use, this is a perfect method to try. You can bring a cut batting (80/20 or cotton only)piece 10.5” x 12” along with a same size backing fabric of your choice. Any strip scraps you have up to 2.5 wide. This project can be for one block to try it = potholder, or you can use all your scraps and batting scraps and continue making blocks. I will demo how to sash the blocks together on sew day.
