As an Element of Art, form connotes something that is three-dimensional and encloses volume, having length, width, and height, versus shape, which is two-dimensional, or flat. A form is a shape in three dimensions, and, like shapes, can be geometric or organic.

TOM - Technique of the Month

Learn a new modern technique each month. Make a block in the Pantone color of the year, Living Coral with a cream and turn in to be put into a charity quilt at the end of the year. Use only solids or tone on tones in the 2 colors only. No multiple color prints please. You may go towards orange or pink on the color wheel, but stay true to the hue as much as you can.

Quilt Con Recap: Sheila showed us the current trends and new tools and techniques shown at the convention.


Sheila brought many goodies to share with the membership

She talked about the various winners ( can be seen here ) in the various categories. Aqua seemed to be a favorite color this year as well as unique color combinations like pink and red, more browns as well as oranges and golds. Transparency seems to be making a strong presence as well as the use of creams and off whites and greys as background colors in place of pure whites.

IQSCM has asked if the LMQG would make more pincushions for their fundraiser. These can be done on your own or at a sew day. Patterns can be found on the resource page HERE. 

It was also suggested that we could make Mug Organizers as we have several mugs leftover from Tom Meyers generous donation. Pattern can be found HERE or on the Resource page

A special Challenge/Project was presented. In the museum is a large image of Ardis James first quilt called "Big Blue". The challenge is to randomly pick a block ( from a bag ) and recreate that block in a modern way. The finished piece must be exactly 24" x 24" and will be presented to the museum as a possible gallery show. More information can be found on the Big Blue tab at the top of the page.

Modern Disappearing Act: Lincoln MQG’s Charity Quilt in Nashville! 

This year’s charity quilt challenge was to use tiny pieces and an exciting color palette!

 Our quilt called “Modern Disappearing Act” was displayed during the QuiltCon 2019 meeting in Nashville.

During the hot summer months in Nebraska, we began our planning meetings to decide which colors to use and what type of tiny piecing.  Creativity was in the air as we explored the endless options of tiny piecing!  Side note:  since it was blazing hot, we met and had locally made ice cream at the University of Nebraska Lincoln’s Dairy Store.  A stop to make if you are ever in town.



 We wanted to keep it clean and make the small pieces the show of the finished design.  To be able to involve multiple quilters we settled on the disappearing nine patch.  It was fun to get together on the sew days and see the process come together as the nine patch colors were randomly placed.  To give more impact, the tiny pieces were then set on a diagonal. 

 
 As fall came around, the quilting was done member’s long arm and those helping got some experience with long arm quilting.  The binding was completed by several members during one sitting, again bringing our members together doing what we love. 

 It was an early start to the winter in Nebraska and the time we spent together made us a closer community of quilters.  The act of coming together and donating your time, knowledge, equipment and notions binds us not only to each other but to the community that we support with our work.   

 he finished quilt was displayed on an art sculpture outside of Lincoln’s very own International Quilt Study Center and Museum.  Another stop to add to your list of great things to do in Nebraska.

Charities that will be supported through this work include:  Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln, Asian Cultural and Community Center, The Lighthouse and Fresh Start.

Flood Relief and what you can do: There are many organizations taking monetary and other donations right now. Many areas are still assessing loss and damage. National Quilting Day - Recap

This year honored the Quilts of Valor. Here you can see just a few of these special quilts beautifully displayed on the museums curved staircase.

The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

One of the interactive booths featured Prayer Flags.

Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, which is a common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Therefore, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all.

GO! Fabric Cutters

At Aurifil they believe that education is key… that sharing extensive knowledge on the construction and behavior of Aurifil threads will help customers make informed choices when purchasing thread.

Lincoln Quilt Guild displayed a lovely raffle quilt named Nebraska Prairie Wedding.

Here we have a print making demonstration showing how wood cuts are used to print designs on fabric.
