September 2024 LMQG Meeting

Our September meeting will feature former member Diane Wilson sharing about the Kawandi technique, and teaching us how to make a small mug rug.

Since this is a hands-on project, the zoom experience will not be as enjoyable.  Please try to join us in person.

What to bring:
  • 7” square of backing fabric (for an unfinished edge), or a 9” square for folding around the edges.  (You may want to turn &stitch your edges ahead of meeting to save time.  See images below.)
  • 15 (+ or -) charm sized or smaller scraps in coordinating colors. (Batiks are harder to stitch through.) does not have to only be quilting cottons.
  • 7” square of thin batting.
  • Pins, thimble, small scissors, a #8 embroidery needle (some will be available). #8 Perle Cotton (some will be available), 12 wt. Wonderfil Spaghetti, Shibori thread, or the equivalent.

LMQG has a stash of scraps (and possibly some backing squares and batting) that will be available and as mentioned above, some needles and thread will also be available.

First piece: backing turned to finish the edge, and all pieces with turned edges.
Second piece: raw outer edge and raw edges on all pieces.

Make a Mini - Make a Friend, and a Free Negative Space Pattern

The 2025 MQG Mini Swap

Did you have the best time with our LMQG Mini Swap?? Well - you will have the chance to keep that fun going with the MQG Mini Swap. Sign ups open September 23. As they say "Make a mini - make a friend!".

From the email that should be in member inboxes: We’re excited to host the 9th Annual MQG Mini Swap! Swap sign ups will open Monday, September 23 - the best place to find the sign up link will be in the Modern Monday email on the 23rd. Be sure to check out the Participant Rules as we have a number of updates this year to help make it the best swap yet. In the meantime, Swap Fairy sign ups are now open. Swap Fairies are the amazing volunteers that help make the swap happen by managing communications and check-ins with a group of around 20 swappers. Communication templates and reminders, as well as assistance troubleshooting any issues are all provided by MQG Staff. Swap Fairy applications are open now through September 20, 2024.

New Negative Space Free Pattern

Don't forget about your MQG member benefits! This month there is a new quilt pattern in the Resource Library: Empty Rings.

In the third installment of our Negative Space educational programming, we’re sharing a new quilt pattern. Empty Rings, designed by Augusto García, makes the negative space a focal point of this design. The pattern features Foundation Paper Piecing and Double Drunkard’s Path techniques to create the rings and the seamlessly integrated negative space.

The first article on Negative Space this quarter was On Demand Education: Negative Space with Augusto Garcia.
The first negative space pattern he developed was the Hollow X.

Sew Day - September 14th!

Don't forget our upcoming Sew Day this Saturday, September 14th from 10:30 - 3:00.

Come and help assemble our QuiltCon Community challenge quilt!

Sheila Green will be holding her Mono Printing workshop that day as well. Contact Sheila to see if spots are still available. Mono Printing workshop.

As always, bring a project you are working on, need advice on, or even want to give just a short technique demo about. This is your time to sew without all those pesky interruptions at home. Bring a sack luch if you wish and there will be a refrigerator available if needed.

Also - if you have an idea for a Sew Day workshop for 2025 you can download the form from our Community Facebook page or email your idea to lincolnmodernquiltguild@gmail.com and we can help get you started! We know there are talented members out there - think forward to 2025 opportunities. Paper piecing, applique, big hand stitching, surface design technique, a project like a bag or wall hanging? Think about what others may want to learn or make.
