Quilt Con 2021 Community Outreach Quilt

• This year, it's all about the curves! Check out MQG's Community Outreach Quilt specifications. 
• Deadline is January 15, 2021 for a completed and pictured quilt.

Gel Printing

• We shared a video on how to use a gel print
• Find a DIY gel plate using gelatin and glycerin, agar, or find out more about commercial options here.
• Glycerine can be found in the skin care section of some pharmacies (Elisa found it at CVS)
• Looking at other surface materials?? Try styrofoam - a tip from Megan Nygren and she says it works just as well!!

Favorite Quilting Tool

• If there's one thing quilters love besides fabric, it's tools. Our members enthusiastically shared their faves! We couldn't just pick one, so here's the list in all its glory! Share more on the comments below, Facebook, or Instagram!

• Vicky Bedell, a cutting tool that made cutting chain pieces fast and easy.
• Rhonda Eddy: a head lamp with LED lights on each temple
• Jennifer McKitrick: hexie templates she is using for a quilt as you go
• Liz Thanel: snips and wine
• Tom Meyer: he created a wooden stand for thread cones and wooden Binding Buddy used to roll binding . He demonstrated both and said he would make more for sale.
• Linda Gale: a small roller used as a finger presser (Clover brand) and a template for curves.
• Nancy Goff: a headlamp found at a quilt show (Vivalux USA.com).
• Elisa Salas: a toilet paper roll threaded on a long narrow piece of fabric that goes around the neck used for binding.  She also shared her notebook with graph paper pages that contains the planning, history and fabric samples of all her projects.
• Pat Kant Modrell: a small double stiletto that she uses to turn corners on masks.
• Sarah Maseth: thread gloss in a tin that doesn’t dry out quickly (Ponderosa brand).
• Diane Wilson: a small speaker that she uses in her sewing room to listen to music.
• Albie Osborn: a clear plastic binding tool that makes miter angles easy (TQM Products Binding Tool).
• Jeni Kuzak: a coffee cup with a pincushion that fit snuggly in the top. She keeps pins and other things in the bottom.  It protects these things from the cat.
• Megan Nygren: her grandmother’s pie plate that holds random tools and fits under the extension on her sewing table where it’s handy and not in the way.
• Jill Straight: spring loaded scissors (Fiskars) that are easier on her hands.

Show and Tell:

• Sarah Maseth showed a rope bowl made with 7/32 cotton rope from Ace Hardware $8.99 for 100’.
• Vicky Bedell has been rust dying fabric.  Wrap rusty objects in the vinegar-soaked fabric, leave for a period of time, rinse and wash and iron.
• Albie Osborn made an “ugly quilt” using up fabric.  She used 12 fabrics to make blocks for a picnic quilt.
• Tom Meyer finished a colorful, scrappy improv quilt, making the backing also in improv shapes in neutrals.
• Linda Gale showed a baby quilt and progress on her Dream panel quilt.
• Sheila Green encouraged the group to make more masks showing one of her dolls with a mask.
• Rhonda Eddy reworked a panel she cut apart and inserted black sashing throughout.

April Meeting Recap

Zoom meeting # 2 was a success! Thank you everyone for attending.

Members overwhelming agreed having a May Sew Day would be great! The board will plan it.

1/2 Square Triangles - 6 Ways

Our education part of the meeting was hosted by our very own Jennifer McKitrick. You can see her video here where she shows 6 ways to make 1/2 square triangles for projects big and small.

What's Your Color Zone? 

Your homework, should you choose to accept it, is to find your color zone. This will help you to identify what are your favorite colors and how wide ranging they are in hue and value.  In the April meeting agenda post, we featured a video on how to find your color zone. What an eye opening exercise! Please post your color zones on the April meeting or April recap posts.
