Scrap Blitz - Tonight we talked about scraps. What do you consider a scrap? Smaller than a breadbox or tiny slivers trimmed and tossed? Do you cut them into managable sizes like squares or strips, or do you toss them in a bin, as is, weird shape and all.
Is a scrappy quilt and a scrap quilt the same? While scrappy is sometimes defined as a certain number of different fabrics, scrap is taken to mean leftovers from previous projects, the bits and bobs you might toss.
Kristi showed several ways to use these pieces we all seem to have in great numbers in a multitude of shapes and sizes.

Tiny leftover wedges make a nice piece to make into a pillow, add to a backing as a random piece or a small table topper. Tinier pieces can be made into refrigerator magnets.
Several members brought projects made from scraps. Are these scrappy or scrap quilts? We will leave that for you to decide. Suffice to say many gorgeous works can be made from what some would call leftovers and toss away.
Now..some fun. Members were asked to bring a one gallon plastic bag filled with scraps from their own collections. One member, Michelle, has just begun quilting and while she was able to fill a gallon bag, neatly as I have ever seen, these were her only scraps.
Two groups of 6 tables each were set up and all the scraps were pulled into the centers. Numbers were secured to the edges ranging from 1-20 at each table.
Taking their one gallon empty bag, they were instructed to hold that bag in one hand at all times. They could not put it down leaving just one hand free to grab scraps.
As music played, members rotated around the tables eyeing the piles of fabric as they went.
When the music stopped, they were given a prompt such as, take only 1 scrap, take a scrap from the person on your left or free for all, grab all you can.
By the end of the evening there were many
stuffed bags and happy faces.
But..this is not the end of the story! Time for a Challenge!

The Rules
Must be an item started after Feb 26th
Must be a finished piece, 3 layers, quilted and bound
Modern elements included.
Any size larger than 16 inches
Must be 75-100% scraps, not including backing and binding.

Learn a new modern technique each month. Make a block in the Pantone color of the year, Living Coral with a cream and turn in to be put into a charity quilt at the end of the year. Use only solids or tone on tones in the 2 colors only. No multiple color prints please. You may go towards orange or pink on the color wheel, but stay true to the hue as much as you can.

If you like the technique, try making more blocks in a fun palette of your choosing and play with different layouts, like a row by row or alternate grid of some kind. HERE are some suggestions for creating an alternate grid.
