April Meeting Highlights and New Meeting Space

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Did you know that 8750 tons of textiles go into our local landfill every year? That's a lot of fabric! Our April program focused on upcycling fabric items for quilters. Upcycling means taking an an item that has fulfilled it's useful life and processing it to make something better than the original. Some reasons for doing this would be to keep unwanted items out of a landfill, to express creativity or to make a special memorial keepsake.

To explore this topic further, we had four demonstration tables set up.

Marsha Conley showed us quick ways to deconstruct shirts to make usable pieces of fabric. Isn't her quilt made from men's striped shirts wonderful?

Roxanne O'Hare had all kinds of different clothing items including pants and linen dresses that she cut up and made into quilt blocks. After cutting up the various textiles, she sorts them into categories by weight so they work well together when she wants to use them.

Suzanne Rose had many fun creations made from selvages! She showed several ways that selvages can be sewed together to make a made fabric.

Carolyn Garner talked about using t-shirts to make memory quilts. Here she is showing the interfacing she uses to prepare the t-shirt fabric.

We had a great time going around to each demo and learning useful information about upcycling from these ladies!

Our guild has grown rapidly in the last few months! We are now up to 50 members and are bursting at the seams in our current meeting location. We are so thankful to Derek Geise and the staff at the Bernina Sewing Studio for providing the space for us to have our meetings and for hosting our first modern guild quilt show.

And so, as we have outgrown our original meeting space, we are pleased to announce our new meeting location. The board of directors has accepted a proposal from the International Quilt Study Center and Museum to hold our monthly meetings in their first floor seminar room from 5:30-7:30 on the last Tuesday of each month, beginning in May and continuing through October. This is very exciting for our guild and we are thrilled to be invited to meet in that space!

May Program:
"Exercise In Design"
Want to branch out and learn how to design your own modern quilt? Sheila Green, Kristie Jarchow and Jen Van Dyke will help us put the modern aesthetic into practice as we work in teams, creating designs using the quarter square triangle and it's four variations. All supplies will be provided.

This exercise is an educational offering from Jean Larsen and Pam McCallie of the Chattanooga Modern Quilt Guild.

For more information on upcoming challenges, click on the meeting minutes tab above, links are there in the April minutes.

February Meeting Reminder

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Just a quick reminder that the next meeting is coming up soon, on Tuesday, February 23 from 5:30-7:00pm at the Bernina Sewing Studio at 1265 S Cotner Blvd, in the Piedmont Shopping Center.  Quilter and photographer Taura Horn, will be giving a presentation on photographing your quilts.

We will be taking down the quilt show at the end of this meeting, and everyone will be able to take their quilt home.  So if you want your quilt back, it is very important that you come to the meeting to get your quilt, or arrange for a friend to hold it for you.  This also means it's the last weekend to come see the quilt show!  It's all at the Bernina Sewing Studio, hope to see you all there!

Our Sew Day at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum was so much fun, we had several demos on crazy flying geese and on making quick half square triangles.  Head on over to the Lincoln MQG Facebook page to see more photos!  Tag yourself or your friends if you see them, you don't have to have a Facebook account to look at photos.

January Meeting Highlights

Thursday, February 11, 2016

Our first meeting of the year was packed full of new guild members, the curious, and lots of information about what's coming up this year!

The first Sew Day for Lincoln MQG members will be this Saturday, February 13th from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the International Quilt Study Center.  Bring your sewing machine, a project you're working on, and sew with friends in the beautiful atrium area of the IQSCM!  The guild challenge “Try- Angles” was explained at January's meeting, the due date for this will be the March Meeting.  At Saturday's Sew Day, there will be some quick and easy demos on actual triangles that you might use in your challenge piece.  Hope to see you all there!

For the National Quilting Day celebration at the IQSCM on Saturday March 19th we are in need of improve quilts to show as examples in the booth and to be used during the Modern Quilting lectures at 11 am and 2 pm.  At the booth, space will be limited, so we are looking for smaller improv pieces that represent work inspired by the Gees Bend quilters, Sherry Lynn Wood and/or have been done during our “Improv at the Museum” sew days.  These quilts will be collected this Saturday, Feb. 13th at our sew day at the Museum from 10:30-3:30 or at our next Guild meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:30.

We are also still looking for volunteers for our booth at National Quilting Day, for all time slots: 9-11am, 11-1pm, and 1-3pm.  Ultimately we want 4 people at the booth at all times.  Please contact Colleen James if you would like to sign up or have questions: cmcjames10 [at] gmail.com

We also started a bucket list/time capsule, where everyone there wrote down their quilting goals for 2016.  Want to make your quilts more modern?  Bigger quilts? Finish up projects?  It all went in the can and we'll open it in January 2017 to see how we did.

The quilt that our guild members made together for Habitat for Humanity, will be in the new house for the dedication ceremony on Saturday, February 20th at 9am.  Please come and meet the family who will get to love the special quilt for years:)

As the Lincoln MQG is now officially a part of the national MQG, we encourage everyone to sign up with the MQG website to get their newsletters, free patterns and to connect with our own guild page on their site and be a part of the larger modern quilting community.

The next Lincoln MQG will be on Tuesday, February 23rd from 5:30-7:00pm at the Bernina Sewing Studio, Taura Horn will give a presentation on photographing your quilts.

And last but not least, we had another great Show-And-Tell! Here are a few photos, go to our Facebook page and see the whole gallery.  You don't need to be signed up for Facebook to look at the photos.

Monday, January 25, 2016

Over the weekend we had an opening reception for our Modern Quilt Exhibition at the Bernina Sewing Studio Gallery, and were so pleased with the amazing turn out!  It was great to see so many people showing up from all the different areas of Lincoln's quilt scene, and it was really fun for the artists to talk about modern quilts.

Holiday Party Fun and New Challenge for the New Year!

Monday, December 14, 2015

Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us for our Holiday social.  I think everyone had fun, ate some great treats and had at least one good laugh!

Jennifer made a scrappy wall-hanging
Several members had show and tell items to share.

Suzanne made her mom a quilt
Nancy designed and executed this paper pieced flower quilt
Kris made a variable star quilt
Sheila made a curling iron carry bag

Colleen made a sew together bag

Food galore and pretty paper packages of "ugly" fat quarters.

The FQ exchange was a lot of fun. Everyone went home with something worse or better than expected! I already cut mine up and put it in a block! To see a video of our Name that Quilt block Charade game go to our FB page

I think a good time was had by all!  We also had two new guests that might be joining us in the future, Mary's friend Barb and Suzanne's friend Ruvini.
