The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is asking for rainbow colored heart quilts to be donated to survivors and families of victims of the June 12th mass shooting. Our guild has signed up to send one finished quilt.

We are asking for at least thirty 10" blocks (10.5" unfinished) to make our quilt. The blocks should have a low volume background (light printed or white) with saturated brights fabrics for the hearts. 

To keep things simple, please use this tutorial to make your 10" blocks and press your seams open. 

The heart blocks are due at our June 28th meeting.

National Quilting Day March 19 and Feb. recap

Saturday March 19th is National Quilting Day at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum  from 9 - 3. Our guild will be on the second floor demonstrating improv piecing and cutting throughout the day. Nancy Goff will be demonstrating tessellations and Sheila Green will be giving a talk at  11:00 and again at 2:00 on What is Modern?  Lots of fun activities and admission is free so bring your family and friends!!!!



Feb. meeting highlights:
---Taura Horn gave us information about photographing your quilts. What to do and what not to do to have successful quilt photographs. Once you master a few tricks you can enjoy prints of your works, share them or keep them in an archive. You might even be interested in entering a contest or show with your beautiful quilt photograph!

---Our wonderful exhibition of members works hanging at The Bernina Sewing Studio slowly came down. We had a huge turnout as far as visitors to our show. Great big "Thank You" to all who participated to make this happen!!!

---and finally....Habitat for Humanity family received the quilt our guild made. This was such a wonderful experience to see our quilty hard work go to a lovely family! Thank you again to all who participated in the making and sharing of this quilt!

January Meeting Highlights

Our first meeting of the year was packed full of new guild members, the curious, and lots of information about what's coming up this year!

The first Sew Day for Lincoln MQG members will be this Saturday, February 13th from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the International Quilt Study Center.  Bring your sewing machine, a project you're working on, and sew with friends in the beautiful atrium area of the IQSCM!  The guild challenge “Try- Angles” was explained at January's meeting, the due date for this will be the March Meeting.  At Saturday's Sew Day, there will be some quick and easy demos on actual triangles that you might use in your challenge piece.  Hope to see you all there!

For the National Quilting Day celebration at the IQSCM on Saturday March 19th we are in need of improve quilts to show as examples in the booth and to be used during the Modern Quilting lectures at 11 am and 2 pm.  At the booth, space will be limited, so we are looking for smaller improv pieces that represent work inspired by the Gees Bend quilters, Sherry Lynn Wood and/or have been done during our “Improv at the Museum” sew days.  These quilts will be collected this Saturday, Feb. 13th at our sew day at the Museum from 10:30-3:30 or at our next Guild meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:30.

We are also still looking for volunteers for our booth at National Quilting Day, for all time slots: 9-11am, 11-1pm, and 1-3pm.  Ultimately we want 4 people at the booth at all times.  Please contact Colleen James if you would like to sign up or have questions: cmcjames10 [at] gmail.com

We also started a bucket list/time capsule, where everyone there wrote down their quilting goals for 2016.  Want to make your quilts more modern?  Bigger quilts? Finish up projects?  It all went in the can and we'll open it in January 2017 to see how we did.

The quilt that our guild members made together for Habitat for Humanity, will be in the new house for the dedication ceremony on Saturday, February 20th at 9am.  Please come and meet the family who will get to love the special quilt for years:)

As the Lincoln MQG is now officially a part of the national MQG, we encourage everyone to sign up with the MQG website to get their newsletters, free patterns and to connect with our own guild page on their site and be a part of the larger modern quilting community.

The next Lincoln MQG will be on Tuesday, February 23rd from 5:30-7:00pm at the Bernina Sewing Studio, Taura Horn will give a presentation on photographing your quilts.

General Meeting: 

• JoAnn from Bernina talked about what's new in the store.
• Discussion of and amending new bylaws to set up our new guild, voted on and approved. Updates will be done soon and you can view under the tab at the top of the page under Guild Basics. 
• Leaders were nominated and elected for the new official year as we join the National Modern Quilt Guild.   President: Colleen James; Co-Vice Presidents: LInda Crump and Nancy Goff; Secretary: Kris Jarchow; Treasurer: Sheila Green; Co-Social Media Coordinators: Taura Horn and Jennifer VanDyke.   Congrats to all on the new board. This should be a fun new year!
• Dues were collected which go into effect for the new year Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2016. You can still join our guild by printing and filling out the form for new members (top tab under Guild Basics) and mailing your payment to us. Contact: info.lincolnmqg@gmail.com for where to send. Dues are $35.00 for the year. Please post by November 14th.
• Charity Quilt blocks were collected. If you would like to make one or more you can use the tab at the top of the page for Outreach to see what we are doing. Blocks should be turned in my Nov 14th at the Sew Day @ IQSCM so construction can begin that day. 
• This was our last meeting of the year, however, we have a November 14th Sew Day scheduled at the IQSCM.   Please feel free to join us and sew any project or maybe make some holiday gifts. 
• If you would like to make a name tag for the guild some printed LMQG logo fabric has been purchased and you are welcome to have one to sew up your name tag with. One style was shown my member Kris Jarchow below.  General instructions for this name tag/wallet will be shared at the Sew day on Nov. 14th.  Feel free to make yours how you wish. 
  
• Holiday Gathering will be December 11th at The Yellow Barne. Link is in the top Right corner of our page. Stay tuned for more details. 
• Sheila Green talked about a great opportunity with Habitat for Humanity for us to present our charity quilt to a  family. Some information about the family: HERE This will be a great way to be part of our community.
• Sheila also shared with us about The National Quilting Day March 19,2016. Volunteers are needed to make the day a success at the IQSCM. Opportunity for us to share some of our 'improvisation' work.  This would be another opportunity for us to reach out into the community. Contact Sheila for opportunities to volunteer and be a part of it.
