Thank you to all our Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild members who volunteered at National Quilting Day on March 18th! A special thank you to those who served as planning committee members, Up Cycling committee, raffle quilt sales and everyone who helped all around the International Quilt Study Center & Museum throughout the day! 

The LMQG displayed upcycled projects made by our members and demonstrated upcycling projects  throughout the day.

February Sew Day Highlights

We had a full house at the IQSCM on Saturday with 25 LMQG members in attendance. Sewing alongside us was the Quilts of Valor group, which was pretty fun! We were mingling back and forth, seeing what everyone was working on. It was one big quilting party!

The focus of the day was sewing curves. Three of our members demonstrated a few different ways to sew them. 

Top Row: Kristie Jarchow demonstrated how to use the Quick Curve Ruler and had a completed pillow to show one of many possible designs.

Middle Row: Mary Dittenber stacked fabric and cut it with a rotary cutter to make wavy curves.

Bottom Row: Deanna Larson showed how to cut and sew a traditional drunkards path block using a template. 

Several of us then tried sewing something curvy. Here are some of the results!

February Sew Day Reminder

Our first Sew Day of 2017 is this Saturday at the IQSCM! We will be learning about different techniques for sewing curves with Deanna Larson, Mary Dittenber and Kristie Jarchow. 

If you want to get your curve on, bring contrasting fabrics, rotary cutter, mat, scissors, straight ruler and sewing machine. 

Kristie will be demonstrating the Quick Curve Ruler and you will need to bring at least two 7.5" squares of contrasting fabric to try it. 

Mary will be demonstrating a stack and slice technique. 

Deanna will show a traditional Drunkards Path block.

As always, bring whatever projects you want to work on and if you have a finished project, bring it for show and tell!

September Meeting Highlights

September Meeting Program: "BACK to Basics"
with Kristina Morrow, Janeese Olsson, Sheila Green, Pat Kant and June Pederson.

Our talented members showed us how to make the backs of our quilts look as great as the fronts.

Janeese showed us different ways to baste a quilt, including thread and pin basting, fusible web tape and spray basting.

Kristina made several samples of different binding methods, such as magic binding, facing, pillow casing and how to use the quilt back as binding.

Sheila covered a couple different ways to make a quilt sleeve, as well as shared some different hanging rods. 

Pat's thoughtful quilt labels inspired us to up our quilt label game! 

Thank you for an informative meeting ladies, we learned a lot!

August & September Sew Day Highlights

We've enjoyed two sew days in a row at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum,  having one in August AND September!
The focus for the August sew day was "Wonky Houses." The scraps were flying as Kristie Jarchow showed us how to make some fun house blocks! Finished blocks can be made into wall hangings for Habitat for Humanity.

Our guild's latest challenge, "Make A Statement," is to make a quilt of any size that features words. Have you started yet? They are due at the October meeting! 

September's "What Are You Trying To Say?" was focused on adding text to our quilt projects. Phyllis Higley, Kristie Jarchow and Jennifer Van Dyke presented lots of ideas for our "Make A Statement" challenge! Paper pieced letters, fabric paint, thread writing and appliqued letters were shown for inspiration. 

There was a variety of quilt projects being worked on and the lovely ladies of the QuiltCon Charity Quilt team made progress on the charity quilt.

July Meeting Highlights

July Program: Dr. Hillestad on Creativity

Dr. Robert Hillestad gave a delightful talk Tuesday night! He is a design educator and studio textiles artist whose work has been shown in more than 150 exhibitions in the US and abroad and is represented in numerous private, corporate and museum collections. When he retired after 31 years of teaching at UNL, the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery was named in his honor.

His love of textiles began in his mother's sewing room. As a child, he would sort fabrics from her scrap bag into different colors and textures. The creative process had begun!

His inspiration comes from many places. Art, architecture and fabrics speak to him, as well as collections of things. He uses many different techniques to create his works, from knitting and crochet to painting sewing and dyeing.  It was a special treat to have his assistants walk the pieces around the room so they could be seen up close! 

Here's a quick list of his advice to us on how to be creative.

• Find mentors
• Interact with people and community. 
• Failure is part of the process. Never discard a project because work evolves over time. 
• If you are out of ideas, change up the mode, go shopping or change projects. 
• Do not wait to create that idea in your head, someone else will beat you to it!
• Do something creative every day!

June Meeting Highlights

June Program:

Phyllis Higley presented "Words In Quilts: Giving New Meaning to Journal Quilts."

 Phyllis shared many of her quilted journal pieces, telling us about her process of putting them together, as well as the inspiration for each one. Several of them had the story written out directly on the fabric with a fabric pen, while in others, the quilting told the story. Phyllis encouraged all of us to validate our creativity. Don't be afraid to try new ideas and continue trying until you come up with something that speaks about you! Thank you for the inspiration, Phyllis!

We had a quilt group from Davenport, Iowa join us after their tour of the quilt museum. It was nice to have you ladies!

LMQG July-October 2016 Challenge: Make A Statement

Our new challenge is to create a modern quilt containing text or characters of some kind (letters, phrases, foreign or domestic...use your imagination!) Due at our October 25, 2016 meeting. We hope everyone will give this challenge a try!

Thank you to all who donated heart blocks for the Orlando MQG quilt drive. We asked for 30 blocks and received over 60! Wow you are wonderful! We will be assembling the quilt and sending it by the end of July. 

Linda Crump already finished a heart quilt for Orlando! Love the heart on the back.

Lancaster County Fair
Enter your quilts for the Lancaster County Fair! Quilt check in is August 8th. Quilts are displayed August 10th-13th and quilt pick up is the 13th and 14th. The Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild will once again sponsor the Best Modern Quilt prize.

July Meeting Program: Dr. Robert Hillestad, "Creativity"

May Program: "Designing in the Modern Aesthetic: Quarter Square Triangles," presented by Sheila Green, Kristie Jarchow and Jennifer Van Dyke. We had plenty of room for the activity in our new meeting location, the International Quilt Study Center and Museum!

Mary Ourecky welcomed our group to the IQSCM. Thanks, Mary! We are thrilled to be able to meet in this wonderful space.

This month, we decided on having a group activity focused on design. Each table worked as a team to create a quilt design using the quarter square triangle in it's four variations. We tried to incorporate some modern design elements, such as minimalism, no borders, asymmetry, exaggerated scale, and use of negative space. 

Working in teams to create ONE design proved to be a challenge but the resulting designs were very interesting! It was also fun to get to know one another a little more! 

Special thanks to Jean Larsen and Pam McCallie from the Chattanooga Modern Quilt Guild for sharing your educational exercise with us!  

Hopefully we will see some of these designs made into real quilts!

June Meeting Program:
Phyllis Higley will present "Words in quilts: Giving new meaning to journal quilts"

Phyllis will give a trunk show/lecture/demo of her exploration of incorporating words into quilts. Phyllis says, "Whereas journal quilts are small quilts made to explore new techniques and story quilts use pictures to tell a story, I wanted to combine words and pictures to tell a more complete story or to enhance a design element. I've used quilting, applique, improv piecing letters, and handwriting on fabric. I will show examples of each. I'll also provide some tips for those who want to give it a try."

April Meeting Highlights and New Meeting Space

Did you know that 8750 tons of textiles go into our local landfill every year? That's a lot of fabric! Our April program focused on upcycling fabric items for quilters. Upcycling means taking an an item that has fulfilled it's useful life and processing it to make something better than the original. Some reasons for doing this would be to keep unwanted items out of a landfill, to express creativity or to make a special memorial keepsake. 

To explore this topic further, we had four demonstration tables set up.

Marsha Conley showed us quick ways to deconstruct shirts to make usable pieces of fabric. Isn't her quilt made from men's striped shirts wonderful?

Roxanne O'Hare had all kinds of different clothing items including pants and linen dresses that she cut up and made into quilt blocks. After cutting up the various textiles, she sorts them into categories by weight so they work well together when she wants to use them.

 Suzanne Rose had many fun creations made from selvages! She showed several ways that selvages can be sewed together to make a made fabric.

Carolyn Garner talked about using t-shirts to make memory quilts. Here she is showing the interfacing she uses to prepare the t-shirt fabric.

We had a great time going around to each demo and learning useful information about upcycling from these ladies!

Our guild has grown rapidly in the last few months! We are now up to 50 members and are bursting at the seams in our current meeting location. We are so thankful to Derek Geise and the staff at the Bernina Sewing Studio for providing the space for us to have our meetings and for hosting our first modern guild quilt show. 

And so, as we have outgrown our original meeting space, we are pleased to announce our new meeting location. The board of directors has accepted a proposal from the International Quilt Study Center and Museum to hold our monthly meetings in their first floor seminar room from 5:30-7:30 on the last Tuesday of each month, beginning in May and continuing through October. This is very exciting for our guild and we are thrilled to be invited to meet in that space!
