at the Fair

This year the Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild board decided to combine our regular sew day with the happenings at the Lancaster County Super Fair. Over the last few years we have encouraged our members to enter the county fair. This will be the 3rd year we have sponsored a "Best Modern" ribbon and prize.

Our regular sew day falls on August 12 but this year we opened that up to Thurs, Friday AND Saturday Aug 9-12th. The Quilts will be  up and open for display at the Fair:

Wed August 9 - 5pm to 9pm

Thursday August 10 - 10 to 9pm

Friday August 11 - 10 to 9pm

Saturday August 12 - 10 to 8:30pm

**note the fair has already opened but the Quilts do not go on display until the above dates. 

August 3 is the last day to enter your Quilts in the county fair!!!!

* please make sure you have your name on your quilts and a flap of fabric to cover up name for the judging!!!

Thank you to all the members who signed up to sew, give demos to members and the public and manage the raffle quilt by selling tickets. We are a community based group so pitching in and helping where we are needed is a wonderful way to show the community what we are all about and have fun while we are doing it. 

Our member, Cynthia Levis is quilt superintendent at the county fair this year. She has been asking for help with white gloving the quilts and quilt hanging and take down. If you have not already signed up please contact her cynthialevis@hotmail.com. For all those that signed up to Sew or help out she will be contacting you to let you know where to pick up parking stickers so you can get into the West top parking area during the fair. This is the entry off of 84th street by the train caboose and recycle center (Gate 1, Lot K). Quilts are housed in the Lincoln room which is the West most building.  
****There are golf cart pick-ups periodically. Make sure you can carry your supplies if one is not available. You can park temporarily near the building and unload but will have to park up on Lot K.  There are restrooms very near and food by the entrance most times and the room has A/C.

**If you are interested in this check out the link above and bring supplies to try making string set stripes. As a group we can figure out how to make these blocks. 

Members can bring whatever you want to sew on, UFO's or maybe start something new?  If you would like to try some of the demo projects please bring some scraps so you can try them. Please bring all you need to sew same as our regular sew days: sewing machines and supplies, ironing and cutting surfaces. Electrical extension cords that are heavy and multiple people can use would be great. 

Raffle tickets will be sold while sewing at the fair for our "Ne 150 Habitat Quilt"

**Member Linda Gale is wanting to give away a couple of quilt frames. (I actually have 2 frames that I don't use. The first is a wooden frame for hand quilting that has only been used once. It is selling for $149. The other is a Gracie Queen 4 rail system for use with a domestic frame. It is selling for  $999 at Wal-Mart online. ***Also: Bring your "most" Modern quilt for our  Bernina Sewing Studio display in Jan. - Feb. 23rd

Please make sure your quilt has a secure label and please make a hand written note simply stating your "modern" quilt elements. Include the quilter if other than yourself.

Here are some guidelines for the modern elements:

Modern quilts and quilters:

• Make primarily functional rather than decorative quilts
• Use asymmetry in quilt design
• Rely less on repetition and on the interaction of quilt block motifs
• Contain reinterpreted traditional blocks
• Embrace simplicity and minimalism
• Utilize alternative block structures or lack of visible block structure
• Incorporate increased use of negative space
• Are inspired by modern art and architecture
• Frequently use improvisational piecing
• Contain bold colors, on trend color combinations and graphic prints
• Often use gray and white as neutrals
• Reflect an increased use of solid fabrics
• Focus on finishing quilts on home sewing machines

Please do not be shy about bringing in a quilt or wall-hanging for the gallery show. We WANT something from everyone no matter what genre it is in.

September Meeting!!

September Meeting is just around the corner! Come out Tuesday 9/29/15 night at 5:30-7:00

It's Back to School Night! 

We will have four feature demonstrations on different techniques you may or may not know about.  Join us and learn something new!!

Information on a group charity project will be shared so you can be a part of our first project.

Bring  show and tell and share things you have made.  Hope to see you all!

Coming up on October 10th is our next Improv Sew Day at the IQSCM. Everyone is free to come and sew with us at 12:00 noon. Some of the members are going to do a Round Robin Score from the Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters. Supplies are needed if you want to participate in this. Read more about it and what you need to bring HERE. If you don't participate in the round robin you can bring and work on any sewing/quilting projects you wish.

What a wonderful setting to sew in...The International Quilt Study Center and Museum rocks when it comes to a fun and creative space.

 

 

 

Colleen James gave a demo on the scrappy curve. Using several scraps of various sizes she was able to construct a 1/4 curve and then pieces 4 together to make a circle or curvy improve shape.

We had a couple try this method for the first time.

Some of the floating square scores from last sew day came back finished this month. (Floating Squares is from the Sherri Lynn Wood book - "Improv for the Modern Quilter)

American Quilts Below the Radar 1950-2000 by Roderick Kiracofe - There will be a lecture by him at the IQSCM on Sept 4th at the Museum for 1st Friday. This is a fabulous book with many examples of improvisation.

 

**Next Improv Sew Day will be October 10th. We are going to try to do Sherri Lynn Wood 's score for Round Robin. If you would like to participate and you did not come to the Aug sew day let me know so I can get you a supply list.  

 

 

 

Ne State Fair Time  so I hope you will enter or maybe go and see the quilts starting Aug. 28th.

Attention quiltmakers! We are about three months away from our second annual Holiday Quilt Drive to collect new or gently used quilts for donation to a local shelter. Last year we had more than 90 donations from across the United States, and we hope to give even more this year.

LMQG Improv Challenge March -May...give it a try!

March-May Challenge:

Throw your patterns out the window and use improvisational piecing to create a MODERN masterpiece!!

1.    You will have until the May 26th LMQG meeting to complete this challenge

2.    There will be a raffle and prizes for all completed entries so mark your calendar

3.    There is no size requirement for this challenge but it needs to be completed (quilted and bound) to qualify

So, here’s to quilting without a plan!  Have fun and be creative and we can’t wait to see all those entries!

Now is a good time to consider joining us for some fun Sew Days at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum. Free admission to the Museum if you are sewing with us!!!

First sewing time is at noon on Saturday April 11. Bring your sewing machine, basic supplies and scraps or FQ's to work with. It will be an open discussion on Improv piecing and experimenting with some techniques to get your started.  We hope you will join us!!!

International Quilt Study Center and Museum

Lincoln Modern Quilt Guild would like to invite you to join with us as we learn about improvisational piecing. Using books, tutorials and trial and error, we will explore what improvisational piecing is all about.  Simple techniques will be discussed at the beginning of the sewing sessions and everyone is welcome to share their knowledge.

Sewing sessions will start at 12 with time to sew your current project or dust off some old ones.

Session dates:  April 11, June 13, Aug 8, Oct 10, Nov 14, Dec 12
